Family Kayaking Sydney: Complete Checklist
Everything you need to know about kayaking with kids on Sydney Harbour — age guidelines, what to pack, safety and the best family-friendly routes.

Kayaking with the Family on Sydney Harbour
Kayaking on Sydney Harbour is one of the best family activities in Sydney. Kids love the adventure and excitement of being on the water, parents love the stunning scenery, and the calm harbour waters make it safe and accessible for families with children of all ages.
Whether you're a local family looking for a weekend adventure or visiting Sydney with the kids, a family kayak outing on the harbour creates memories that last a lifetime. Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect family paddle.
Age and Size Guidelines
Tandem Kayaks for Families
Tandem kayaks are the best option for families. An adult and child share the kayak, with the adult handling the steering and the child helping with paddling from the front seat. Our sit-on-top kayaks are wide, stable and virtually impossible to capsize — even with excited kids on board.
Recommended Ages
- Ages 6 and up for the best experience — children need to be able to sit still for extended periods and feel comfortable around water
- Ages 3–5 can join in a tandem with an adult on calm days, but shorter paddles (30–60 minutes) are recommended
- Under 3 — we recommend waiting until they're a little older
Life Jackets
Life jackets are mandatory for all paddlers, regardless of age or swimming ability. We provide fitted life jackets in all sizes, including children's sizes. Every jacket is checked for proper fit before launch.
Family Packing Checklist
Don't overthink the packing — we provide all the kayaking equipment. You just need to bring:
Essential Items
- Waterproof sunscreen (SPF 50+) — Sydney UV is intense, even in winter. Reapply before launching
- Hats with chin straps — for everyone, so they don't blow off on the water
- Water bottles — one per person, minimum. Stay hydrated
- Waterproof phone case — for photos and emergencies
- Sunglasses with retaining straps — for adults (kids' sunglasses tend to end up in the harbour)
Nice to Have
- Spare dry clothes in the car — someone will get wet. It's part of the fun
- Snacks for afterwards — hungry kids are inevitable after a paddle
- Towels — pack one per person for the drive home
- Light rain jacket — if the forecast mentions any chance of showers
- Small dry bag — for valuables you don't want getting splashed
What NOT to Bring
- Heavy bags or backpacks (no room in the kayak)
- Cotton clothing (gets heavy and cold when wet)
- Expensive electronics without waterproof protection
- Anything you'd be upset about getting wet
Best Routes for Families
Lavender Bay Area (Recommended)
Our Lavender Bay launch point is ideal for families:
- Sheltered water with minimal current — the bay is protected from open harbour winds
- Close to toilets and public facilities at Milsons Point
- Easy parking available on nearby streets
- Luna Park is right there for post-paddle entertainment and ice cream
- Short paddle to see the Harbour Bridge up close — kids are amazed by the size from water level
- Train access — Milsons Point station is a two-minute walk
The McMahons Point Short Loop (1 Hour)
The gentlest family route on the harbour:
- Stay within the calm waters between Lavender Bay and McMahons Point
- Beautiful city skyline views without venturing into busier channels
- Plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities — pelicans, fish and even penguins
- Easy turnaround at any point if younger kids get tired
The Bridge Paddle (1.5 Hours)
For confident families with older kids:
- Paddle east from Lavender Bay past Luna Park
- Continue to the Harbour Bridge — the view looking up from water level delights kids and adults alike
- Turn around at the bridge or continue to Kirribilli for a longer adventure
- Read our Harbour Bridge safety guide before attempting this route
Guided vs Self-Guided: What's Best for Families?
Guided Tour (Recommended for Families with Younger Kids)
For families with children under 10, we recommend a guided tour. Your guide handles:
- All safety monitoring and navigation decisions
- Keeping the group together and at a comfortable pace
- Pointing out wildlife, landmarks and interesting harbour facts (kids love this)
- Responding to any concerns or questions from parents
- Managing the group around ferry routes and other traffic
Our sunrise tour is surprisingly popular with families — kids who can handle the early start are rewarded with an unforgettable experience.
Self-Guided Hire (Great for Confident Families)
Families with older kids or previous kayaking experience may prefer the flexibility of self-guided kayak hire:
- Choose your own pace and duration
- Explore wherever you want
- Stop for snack breaks whenever needed
- No group to keep up with
- Complete freedom over your route and timing
Safety First: Family Kayaking Rules
Family safety is our absolute top priority. Follow these rules for a safe, enjoyable paddle:
- Life jackets on everyone, all the time — no exceptions
- Stay in sheltered areas — avoid the main ferry channels and open harbour
- Keep the family group together — always within visual and vocal range
- Watch for ferry traffic — point out ferries to kids and explain right-of-way rules
- Monitor children's energy levels — turn back before anyone gets too tired
- Check weather on the Bureau of Meteorology before heading out
- Follow NSW Maritime paddle safety guidelines at all times
- Bring a charged, waterproofed phone for emergencies
Making It Fun for Kids
- Make it a treasure hunt — ask kids to spot Luna Park, the Bridge, a ferry, a pelican and a fish
- Let them lead — older kids love being in the front seat and setting the paddle rhythm
- Stop often — don't try to cover too much distance. The best family paddles include plenty of drifting, looking and chatting
- Promise a reward — ice cream at Luna Park after the paddle is a proven motivator
